Sewer line repair in Indianapolis
Most Indianapolis laterals don't fail all at once. They fail at one joint under the front walk, or at the foundation wall, or where a silver maple root finally broke through. A spot repair fixes that section for $1,500–$4,000 and leaves the rest of a serviceable pipe alone.
What a spot repair is
A sewer lateral is 40 to 100 feet of pipe. When the camera finds one collapsed clay joint at 32 feet and the rest of the run holding its shape, replacing the whole thing is throwing money at pipe that is doing its job. A spot repair means we locate the bad section from the camera and the sonde, dig a pit over it, cut out the damaged length, and couple in new SDR-35 PVC with shielded stainless couplings on each end. Then we backfill in lifts, restore the surface, and scope it again.

A collapsed or offset clay joint. The mortar has washed out and one section has dropped below the next, catching paper and catching the camera. This is the single most common failure in Meridian-Kessler, Butler-Tarkington and Irvington, and there is a whole post on it: clay pipe joints and offset joints.
A root intrusion that broke the pipe. Roots come in at a joint, and by the time they have blocked the line twice the joint is cracked. Jetting clears the roots; the repair closes the door. A crushed run of Orangeburg. Usually under a driveway or the front walk, where fifty years of load flattened it. If it is one short section we cut it out; if the camera shows blistering the whole way, that is a replacement and we will say so.
A broken connection at the foundation wall. Old houses settle, the cast iron stub through the wall stays put, and the clay beyond it shears. A short excavation against the foundation, a flexible coupling, and it is done.
A bad section at the main tap. The connection to the Citizens main is the deepest part of the run and the most likely to have been botched in 1955. That repair happens in the right-of-way, needs the permit and the inspection, and is priced accordingly.
When repair is the wrong call
If the camera finds three or more bad spots, if the pipe is Orangeburg with blisters along its length, or if there is a belly that holds water for more than a few feet, we don't sell a spot repair. Depth and frost
Laterals in Marion County are typically four to ten feet deep, deeper near the main. Frost gets three to four feet down in a hard winter, so the pipe itself rarely freezes, but the ground above it does, and a January spot repair means breaking frost with the excavator before the real digging starts. We do winter repairs — a sewer doesn't wait — but if the problem can hold until the ground is soft, the dig is cheaper and the lawn recovers faster. How do you know where to dig?
The camera head carries a transmitter. We run the camera to the break, then walk the lawn with a locator that reads the signal and gives us the spot and the depth to within a few inches. We paint it on the grass before you approve anything. Nobody should be digging exploratory holes in your yard in 2026.
How long does a spot repair take?
Usually one working day: locate and mark in the morning, dig, cut and couple by early afternoon, backfill and a second camera run before we leave. Repairs at the main tap in the street can take two days because the pavement cut and the Citizens inspection are scheduled separately.
Can you repair the line in winter?
Yes. Frost reaches three to four feet in a bad Indianapolis winter, so the excavator has to break through it before the dig starts, which adds time and a little cost. The pipe itself is deeper than the frost and repairs the same way. A sewer that is backing up in January does not get to wait for April.
Will you tell me if I just need it cleared?
